Hey all, some of you may have seen the post in my wife's journal yesterday but I'm going to appeal to you as well.
I'm growing a moustache for the month of Movember (formerly called November). This is designed to raise awareness for mens health issues and the money raised goes to the LIVESTRONG foundation and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. It's important as these two issues rarely get the attention they deserve.
I'm appealing to you all to donate (tax deductible) to this cause here at my MoSpace.
Anyone who donates will get access to a screened friends group of mine where I will be posting pictures of my manly stashe as it grows. Those of you who follow me that I haven't friended yet, I will (sorry my bad, I'm terrible at internets and social networking). It'll be good for a laugh and I'm planning on doing several moustache themed dress-up pictures that you can probably use to blackmail me later (donating more means you get to suggest what manly poses/costumes I put on). Those of you in the San Diego area or able to get to the San Diego area I'll incentivize with a bottle of my MoBroBrew (being started this weekend) if you donate $10 or more (additional bottles will be given for additional donations after the fact). We also have plans to make MoBeerBread that we will be distributing to those who donate.
You can find out more on the main page: http://us.movember.com.
Together we can change the face of men's health. |

Disney has announced that they will be buying Marvel for somewhere in the realm of eleventy-gajillion dollars. With Disney at the helm, I'd imagine Tony Stark is going to forego his alcoholic womanizing ways and instead spend afternoons teaching underprivileged kids to read about the benefits of proper dental hygiene down at the local community center. Also, his next suit will be fully recyclable! I'd also predict that skin-tight suits are out while full-length ballroom gowns and tiaras are the new fighting attire of choice for female superheroines (I'll still love you, Emma Frost). |

I had tentative plans with a friend to see Placebo on September 21st. They're probably one of my favorite rock bands of all time and their new album is pretty damn good. However it looks like after Brian Molko collapsed on stage due to exhaustion (drugs) and some sort of asian flu (drugs) in Japan they're postponing the US-leg of their tour.
Ah well, they'll reschedule. I was wondering why I couldn't buy tickets yet. |

So lately friends and I, being the raucous bunch we are, have taken to playing more games. This is fun, in fact I'm having more fun playing games in groups than I've had in a long time.
What have we been playing and enjoying (those that I own are in bold):
- Yahtzee
- Uno
- Catan
- Caracassone
- Nuclear War
- Gloom
- Lunch Money
- Illuminati
- Munchkin
- Flux
- Apples to Apples
- Give Me the Brain! - Just played this for the first time this weekend and it was great.
In general what we like are clever (Rio Grande Games), easy to play and frequently tongue-in-cheek (Steve Jackson) games for 2-10 people. No 12-hour Axis & Allies marathons or what have you. Also if it has Parker Brothers listed anywhere on it we're probably not that interested.
Any suggestions from the intertubes about other games we should consider giving a look-see? |

I've installed and have been playing around with Google Chrome on my laptop. It's come a long way since the last time I used it. I'm using the beta which has support for themes so you aren't stuck with that god-awful light blue theme that it used to have.
It's pretty quick. Java, AJAX, Flash, basic page rendering... they're all pretty speedy. I even logged onto our SAP portal and have been able to work with that pretty easily. It doesn't render some things quite right though that may be that everyone writes their webapps with IE in mind.
I've been having some trouble with Firefox recently so I'm somewhat inclined to try this out for a while to see if it works for me. It seems that while Firefox likes to spawn a single process and gobble up a bunch of memory, Chrome takes the same amount of memory only spreading it between multiple processes.
But damn the thing is fast. |

Would be a good way for me to finally get high-speed around the house without cutting holes in the walls and running cable (which I'm fine with, but not thrilled about).
Price is a little steep though. |

So Donte Stallworth got 30 days for driving under the influence and killing a pedestrian. Michael Vick got what... like 18 months for running a dogfighting ring.
Something seems off here.
Granted, one was a one-time (hopefully) mistake while the other was a long-running criminal enterprise but still. I kind of think that if we're looking at it on the basis of which caused the more damage I'll put a human life above that of a dog any day. |

This is by far my favorite thing of today. I mean, I know people are stupid, but really? "We demolished a house based on some GPS coordinates." Say it out loud. If it doesn't sound all that stupid to you, please place your reproductive organs in the nearest microwave and set it to "Hiroshima". |

So there's some thought that the Twitpocalypse is coming. I think twitter is fucking retarded, but this interests me.
There is a problem related to the number 2147483647. This is the greatest number a standard signed integer can hold in 32-bit operating systems. As such, unless coded cleverly, that's the greatest integer number most programs can recognize.
The problem is that Twitter stores all of its 140 characters in a database with a key value that's identity-based (meaning it's an incrementing number). I don't doubt that the architects behind twitter have already handled this on their side, so it's not likely that everything will grind to a halt. But twitter-based applications on 32-bit systems which are mostly 3rd party, freeware apps... well let's just say they might not be coded quite so cleverly.
So as you are all informing the world of your inside jokes, meal plans, or vacation plans... you're filling up this database and each one is generating a new number there. Pushing those 32-bit clients that haven't been coded to fix for that into confusion when they try to pull up any twitter messages with keys greater than 2147483647.
I highly doubt it will be much going on other than a couple of people annoyed when the internet noise stops who then have to go update their software. But it's interesting to think about. |

The first is the finest example of teh funny I've seen on the internets in a while. You will laugh:
The second, is fucking fascinating. This guy hooks up a 1964 acoustic (no digital parts at all) modem up to his laptop and dials into a server at his work and punches into the net. This is 300 baud. My first modem was 1200 baud in the late 80's/early 90's and this is exactly what BBSing used to look like back in the day.

| | Old Crow Medicine Show - Wagon Wheel | ] | Ordered all the parts for my new computer. Picked up the monitor today. Windows 7 RC1 is just finishing downloading... Checked out a new computer desk at Costco today that I'm also pretty interested in and may go pick up soon.
Also looked at the new vanity, medicine cabinet, sink, fixtures, etc... for the master bathroom. Estimating about $1500 to buy everything and then have it installed professionally. Maybe a little more/less if we can do it ourselves. Probably would have to have the new shower doors installed professionally for sure. I have to drill a hole in the base of the existing vanity first to see if the tile extends all the way to the wall or if they did it cheaply. That could affect things.
Tomorrow I go back to work. Ah well. All good things must come to an end. |

That is all.
Now is time for cheap mexican food (Ole! Sombrero! N1H1!) and then something in the realm of 172 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
On the flight from Dublin I watched the following movies:
1. Quantum of Solace - Good, not great. Fun watch. Daniel Craig is still a badass. I want his abs. 2. Frost / Nixon - Very good. Then again, I think Nixon was probably the biggest slimeball to ever grace the presidency so seeing him get his ass kicked is nice. 3. Milk - Awesome movie. Sean Penn is really one of the best actors of our time. Great story about an interesting man.
Stay classy, Livejournal. |

Packing up, getting ready to head home.
Seriously, nice timing guys. Let's have an outbreak of swine flu (not really dangerous unless you're a baby, elderly or immunocompromised anyway... much like the normal flu) right as we're traveling abroad.
Been the greatest trip evar. I will do the rundown later and hopefully include some pictures. We learned so much about this country, the culture, the people and ourselves.
You should come here. And get out into the countryside. Dublin is great. The countryside is amazing. Go, get lost (in County Meath like we did, if you choose). Like seriously lost in Ireland (it's easy their GPS systems on the rental cars suck slightly more wang than their signage). You'll find the best little places that you never knew existed and you'll never find in any guidebook. I could probably spend about 3-4 days in Dublin. I could probably spend a year wandering the countryside.
We are coming back here someday. Possibly Cork, Conemaugh, Belfast, Galway, Killarney... we have yet to decide. But it will be. We even tossed around the idea of doing a riding tour on bikes. Probably a bit aggressive for us, but still nice. |
