Ouroboros
It's odd that the current healthcare bill can't get passed in the US for being too liberal. In the rest of the world it would never pass for being too conservative.

I can agree with some of what you said in that maybe a large part of America isn't ready for this yet (were they really ready for the civil rights legislation?). But at some point the culture has to evolve. I'd like to see a little more of the radical cultural evolution that we saw in the 60's-early 90's which seems to be regressing in the last 10 years or so.

But I'd also like a pony.

I think the issue is that when the cultural mores are dictating policies which are actively harmful to a large number of citizens... time to change the culture. We've got estimates between 30 and 50 million uninsured individuals in this country... if we have a culture which would see people suffer poor healthcare to maximize profits or political gain, I'm ashamed of that culture. Even if we decide that profits/politics are more important and don't insure them, we still pay exponentially higher costs for them when they end up in the hospital. Is the culture stupid as well as indifferent? If so... change the culture.

Pretty much.

I so wish we had an opposition party that wasn't just a grab bag of frothing lunatics.

"Both sides?"

Dude holding poster of Obama made up as Batman Joker with "SOCILISM" scrawled underneath doesn't come from my side.

It's hard because all I hear on Economy, Jobs, Healthcare from the Republican party is the equivalent of putting their fingers in their ears and screaming "no, no, no, no!". It seems like everyone wants the same policies that got us to an overpriced healthcare system and the shit economy in the first place because the opposing approach has been labeled "Socialism". Reminds me of the waterboy, where Kathy Bates playing Adam Sandler's mother labels everything as "the Debil!"

As for the Economy, the stimulus packages (put forward by both GWB and BHO) turned out to be wild failures (trying not to get on a tangent here)

Way to slide that one in there... ;-)

The funny part is that of those the one I like the most is tort reform.
